For anyone who is living in or planning to visit the New England area, there is an absolute-must bucket
list that is full of experiences that cannot be had anywhere else. Rhode Island, specifically, has a ton of
“to-do’s” that are perfect for the summer time. Now that school is (almost!) officially out for summer, it
is time to start planning exciting activities for you and your friends and family. One of the most beautiful
and exciting events to attend in Rhode Island is Water Fire, which is a non-profit arts organization that
brings together engagement and community through a stunning, out-of-this-world light show.
Water Fire began in 1994 with the first fire that was put on to celebrate the anniversary of First Night
Providence. Fast forward to 1997 and Water Fire was attracting over 300,000 people during a total of 13
different lightings. Not to mention, the event pulled together hundreds of volunteers and donations,
which is still something that you can participate in today.
Water Fire puts on full lighting shows all through the year and has several coming up throughout the
rest of the summer. This year, Water Fire is sponsored by one of their long-time sponsors, Cox Business.
The show is generally put on during Saturday nights as the sun is setting and goes until around half past
midnight. For the summer, the event is planned for the following dates:
 Saturday, June 22nd
 Saturday, July 20th
 Saturday, August 3rd
 Saturday, August 17th

If you are interested in purchasing a ticket to a Water Fire show, you can visit their website here and
prepare for one of the most monumental and beautiful nights of your summer, and life! If you would
like to go further than just the light show itself, you can also sign up for walking tours, put on by interns
and volunteers, to learn more about the history, theory of design and the management of the show.
